Chapter 10 Producing electronic materials: Valentina Dodge

Uh, I find authoring tools are really helpful. Uh, they enable you to make web-based, interactive teaching materials that are specific to your, uh, learners’ needs and this is particularly useful for language learners, because they enjoy and they really benefit from even simple activities like crosswords or word searches or jumbled sentences, which you can do with, uh, software like Hot Potatoes. And, uh, then you can move on to more complex things where you actually create gap-filled, uh, texts for specific, removing specific words that your learners need to focus on, uh, or highlighting problems, for example, of punctuation.

Chaeepter 11, e-learning:

e-Learning is learning utilizing electronic technologies to access educational curriculum outside of a traditional classroom.  In most cases, it refers to a course, program or degree delivered completely online.


There are many terms used to describe learning that is delivered online, via the internet, ranging from Distance Education, to computerized electronic learning, online learning, internet learning and many others. We define eLearning as courses that are specifically delivered via the internet to somewhere other than the classroom where the professor is teaching.

Chapter 12 Preparing for the future
This ambivalence about technology stems in part from our own experience with it. The very
electronic devices that have become an extension of our children are an enigma to many of us
in the older generation. The buttons — in fact, the entire keyboard — on these devices are often
too small for us to see and use. We can’t read the screen. Technology alienates us from one

another, or we become dependent on it.




Chapter 12, Preparing for the future, may be an interesting additional extra reading. It reviews the current state of the art, and gives advice on how to keep up-to-date in such a changing world and foresees what things like web 2.0, online learning, virtual learning and m-learning may bring. This chapter is very attractive and, even for those already in the field, will certainly offer new discussion and thinking perspectives.
